COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA. – In the fifth meeting of the summer between the Peninsula Pilots (10-3) and Tri-City Chili Peppers (4-10) the two sides combine for 25 runs and provide non-stop fireworks.
Peninsula drove in the first run of the game in the top of the second off an RBI sac fly from Trevon Dabney (James Madison). In the bottom half of the same inning, Willie Havens (Elon) put Tri-City on the board with a two-run shot over the right field wall, good for his fourth home run on the season.
However, the tying run would come around for the Pilots in the form of Zach Lass (University of Richmond) off the RBI base knock from Erik Stock (Connecticut). The Pilots offense continued to click, scoring two runs in the fourth and hung seven more in the top of the fifth to make it 11-2.
As the Pilots scored in four straight frames, Tri-City went scoreless in the third and fourth before getting one run on the board in the fifth from an RBI groundout from Logan Jarvis (Belmont).
Fast forward to the top of the seventh, Peninsula tacked on a pair of runs to make it a 13-3 game. Tri-City then responded with two runs of their own coming from a couple of wild pitches that brought Cade Swisher (Virginia Tech) and Hunter Gilliam (Longwood) around to score.
In the bottom eighth, the Chili Peppers offense exploded to bring the game to a 13-10 score. Tommy Crider started the inning off with a solo home run. Then after two walks and a single, Gilliam drove a curveball 383 feet to right center field for a grand slam. The long ball was his second of the summer and moved him up to a team best 14 RBIs this season.
Pilots would answer with two runs in the ninth to bring the game to its 15-10 final score.
The Chili Peppers will look for revenge tomorrow night against the Pilots, with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. For more information, check out chilipeppersbaseball.com and follow the team on social media for all the latest news and updates.
