Colonial Heights, VA – Michael Dolberry (Longwood) collected six RBIs including a first inning grand slam, starring in a come from behind 15-10 victory for the Tri-City Chili Peppers over the Peninsula Pilots Sunday evening at Shepherd Stadium. Dolberry ended the night a triple short of the cycle and was named CPL Hitter of the Night finishing 3-4 with a walk, three runs scored and his six RBIs. Hayden Ford (Frostburg State) was the winning pitcher for the Chili Peppers, pitching in the top of the seventh inning ahead of a seven-run inning by the Chili Peppers (5-1) in the bottom of the same inning. Ford allowed one run and two walks, plus one hit but got all three outs via strikeout.
Peninsula (0-3) jumped on the Chili Peppers starter Cole Bramhall (Lenoir-Rhyne) early scoring four times in the first inning, but the Tri-City offense did the Pilots one better in the bottom of the inning. The first three Chili Pepper batters of the game reached base highlighted by a leadoff single for Will Bean (Virginia Commonwealth) that extended his hitting streak to four games. Krew Bouldin (Delaware State) brought in Bean from third base with a sacrifice fly for the first run of the inning. Cole Garrett (Virginia Military) drew a walk ahead of Dolberry’s second home run of the season to put Tri-City ahead 5-4. That was all the scoring for the Chili Peppers until the bottom of the sixth inning. Meanwhile the Pilots racked up ten hits to just four for Tri-City through four and a half innnings and held a 9-5 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth where the Chili Peppers began their comeback.
Danny Estrada (Frostburg State) Peninsula’s lead to 9-6 with his RBI single in the sixth inning, extending his hitting streak to five games. Estrada has also recorded RBIs in three straight games and four of his last five and is second for Tri-City in that category with six. The Pilots matched that run in the top of the seventh to make it 10-6 until the bottom half of the inning where the Chili Peppers batted around. The first five Tri-City batters reached base, including a two-run double by Dolberry that cut the lead to 10-8. Dalton Hurst (University of New Orleans) scored Dolberry with an infield single to bring the Chili Peppers one run closer. Estrada drew a two-out walk ahead of Brandon Eike (VCU) who delivered the knockout blow with the second Tri-City grand slam of the night to give the Chili Peppers a 13-10 lead.
Tahraun Hammond (Virginia State) and Will Bean added RBI hits in the eighth inning to finish the scoring for Tri City.
