Hampton, VA- Krew Bouldin’s lead-off double in the top of the ninth inning became the winning run with smart base-running and a sacrifice fly to give the Tri-City Chili Peppers a 2-1 win over the Peninsula Pilots Thursday night at Peninsula War Memorial Field. The Delaware State junior had a hand in both of the Chili Peppers’ runs in the game, leading off the top of the second with a single and coming home on another single by Alex Christie (Hanover). Tri-City pitchers combined to strike out nine Peninsula batters on eight hits against one walk.
It began the exact opposite way that the game started when these two teams last met on Sunday when they combined to score nine runs in the first inning. Trey Morgan (Virginia Military) and Ethan Hamill (Cornell) blanked their opponents in the first inning but both gave up one run in the second. Tri-City (7-1) got the first two batters of the second inning on base including Bouldin’s lead-off hit but only managed to come away with one run thanks in part to a double play ahead of Christie’s RBI single.
Peninsula (0-5) struck out 13 Chili Peppers, adding to a 13 inning stretch dating back to the sixth inning Tuesday against Wilson that includes 19 K’s. Tri-City entered the ninth inning tied 1-1 thanks to the combined pitching of Hamill, Caleb Grizzard (Roanoke), Carter Gorling (Colorado School of Mines), Hayden Ford (Frostburg State), and Marcus Van Alstine (win) (Virginia Military) whom combined to allow two hits and no runs through 5 1/3 innings.
In the ninth Krew Bouldin led off with a double for his third hit of the night. Bouldin has a four game hit streak, going 7 for 17 (.412) after beginning the season 0 for 11. Bouldin was lifted for pinch-runner Michael Dolberry (Longwood) who swiped third base on the first pitch after he entered the game, putting him in position to score on a sacrifice fly by Virginia Tech’s Henry Cooke.
Wyatt Stanley (Randolph-Macon) got the save, striking out two of four batters he faced in the ninth inning.
