Hampton, VA - The Tri-City Chili Peppers fell 10-3 to in-state rivals the Peninsula Pilots on Monday night.
The Chili Peppers batted three up, three down for a quick top of the first. Starting pitcher Danny Kirwin (Rider University) allowed only one hit and no runs in the bottom of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
Tri City also batted three up, three down in the second inning but luckily for them, so did the Pilots. Both teams batted three up, three down once again in the third.
The first Chili Peppers hits of the game came in the fourth inning with singles by Ethan Iannuzzi (Randolph Macon University) and Avery Neaves (University of Lynchburg). Iannuzzi stole home to put his team on the scoreboard. Three hits, a hit by pitch, and a walk allowed the Pilots to put up five runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
Both teams batted three up, three down in the fifth. Tri City batted three up, three down again in the sixth. Clark Driscoll (VMI Commit) took the hill in the bottom of the sixth, during which Peninsula put up an addition three runs.
The Chili Peppers were able to get the bats moving again in the top of the seventh, with hits by Cade Swisher (Virginia Tech), Lucas Donlon (Virginia Tech), and Greg Ryan (Longwood University) that allowed them to score two runs.
Gordon State College’s Thomas Greeson pitched in the bottom of the inning. The Pilots didn’t have any hits, but scored two runs.
Tri City continued to struggle offensively, batting three up, three down once again in the eighth. Terrell Hudson of the University of New Mexico pitched in the eighth inning for the Chili Peppers and held the Pilots to no hits or runs.
The Chili Peppers batted three up, three down again in the ninth to finish off the game with a 10-3 loss.
After two days off, the Chili Peppers will face off against the Pilots at home on Thursday.
